appropriate equivalent on Apple Macintosh computers, in true colour mode

If you're using a Sun SPARCStation running Solaris,
then I can't help you because I've never encountered
a piece of kit that expensive!
Welcome to the latest version of my Pictorial Biography.
This time, I have decided to experiment with style sheets, so that I can
maintain a consistent style across the entire web page in one place. One
of those good ideas which, when tried in practice, falls foul of the
usual browser incompatibilities (sigh).
One of the advantages of style sheets is that I can
have properly indented paragraphs throughout - a nice touch. What a pity
browsers didn't implement this kind of feature prior to style sheets
(sigh again).
And now, after that boring technical preamble, on to the biography
proper. As headlined above, this is principally a pictorial biography,
although I shall annotate the pictures with copious text!
So, what will the inquisitive reader or viewer find in
these pages? Principally, pictures that are related to various aspects
of my life, along with suitable explanatory notes. Here will be found
the people, the things, the ideas that move me, inspire me, stir my
passions. And, liberally sprinkled amongst them, will be opinions. I
have quite a few of these, and I am not afraid to state them. If this
troubles you, then I respectfully suggest that you seek out a somewhat
less polemical website to occupy your browsing time!
The Pictorial Biography is divided into sections. Each
can be reached by hovering the mouse pointer over one of the assorted
decorative buttons provided below, and pressing the appropriate mouse
button when the mouse pointer changes to a little hand (or whatever
other symbol appears on your computer to indicate a
hyperlink).
So, on to the sections. Browse and enjoy. And, when
you have finished browsing the contents of the various sections, scroll
down to the assorted links, and explore those too. Also in the links
section is the little decorative button that allows me to be E-Mailed,
and the little button that allows the Black Chancery font to be
downloaded for those who do not have it. Appropriate notes are supplied
throughout.
Introduction
This is where you will find one or two pictures of me
(if your monitor screen doesn't explode when trying to display them),
one or two pictures connected to where I live, and one or two pictures
of people in my life that do not adequately fit into the other
sections.
19th Century Art
Here you will find a small sample of artworks from my
(now enormous) 19th century art collection. This collection principally
comprises Pre-Raphaelite and Victorian Neoclassical art, along with one
or two works from other artists who shared the time period and, in some
cases, many of their aspirations with the Pre-Raphaelites or the
Neoclassicists. Among the transcendently gifted individuals whose works
are featured here are Rossetti, Waterhouse, John William Godward (for
whom I now have a special soft spot) and Bouguereau.
Sadly, there is insufficient space to include
all of my art collection on the server, as this now comprises
over 3,000 paintings! Such is life (sigh). Meanwhile, feast your eyes
upon the glories of an age when beauty, allied to scholarship, was
considered worth striving for ... and should a certain Damien Hirst pass
this way, then hang your head in shame, you fraudster and charlatan
...
Charles Faris
This section is devoted to the art of Charles Faris,
whom I discovered accidentally when searching the web for art of a
slightly different kind. One of those serendipitous happenstances that
add to the joys of life - Charles and I have been corresponding now
since 1998, and his art has inspired me to write children's stories.
Upon sending some of them to him, he was so delighted that he produced
artworks to accompany them! This project has now assumed a life of its
own, and the full set of childrens' stories inspired by Charles' faerie
art has now grown to nearly 700,000 words in 32 books ... I am still,
sadly, seeking a publisher for them, as persuading publishers to look
away from Harry Potter and product placement for more than five
nanoseconds is proving a bigger challenge than I thought
(sigh).
Meanwhile, take a look at this small selection of
Charles' art, and if you share my passion for his work, visit his own
website via the links further down this page - his oeuvre now
encompasses over 120 artworks!
My Own Art
After I acquired a computer capable of running the
dreaded Windows 98, and more importantly, Adobe PhotoShop, Charles Faris
gave me some tuition on how to use this wonderful art package, and thus,
allowed me to make my own foray into the world of faerie art, partly of
course to produce more illustrations for my children's stories. This is
a small selection from a body of work that in the space of a year, has
now grown to 130 artworks, all produced at the same time as adding to
the collection of stories. What a busy bee am I ...
Go here and take a look at my own vision of the
faerie world, much of it of course inspired by Charles Faris - tread
softly, now!
Pets
This is a section devoted to my pets, or, more
correctly, a collection of creatures past and present that have shared
my life, along with one or two that I wish I could afford to have share
my life! Visit this section to see multi-coloured tropical fish, and a
computer literate budgerigar ... !
Photographs
This section contains a small selection of the
photographs I have taken to accompany my entomological recording
activities, and thus, the principal subjects featured here are
butterflies and wild flowers. Again, only a small sample of photographs
can be displayed here, as the grand total is in excess of
3,500!
Go here to see the natural wonders that can be
found, if one knows where to look, in surprising places - who would
suspect a grimy northern industrial town to be home to
orchids?
Special Treasures
This is the section that contains that which is
especially dear to me. Come here to see my adorable niece Carol (who has
been recast dozens of times in my own artwork as a faerie princess!), a
painting with special resonances for me, and an assortment of other
delights that inspire me.
Faerie Tales
As I have already alluded to above in the section
entitled "My Art", I have written children's faerie tales. Another
decorative button below will whisk the inquisitive away to a page that
contains a potted history of my faerie tales, and a list of the tales
extant thus far. Come and find out more about the enchanted world, first
inspired by Charles Faris' art, which gained momentum of its own and
motivated my own forays into faerie art ...
Links
And now, after that, comes the links. An assortment of
places for you to visit after browsing the assorted sections of the
Pictorial Biography. Again, an assortment of decorative buttons is
provided ... aren't assortments wonderful?

the resource for all aquarists, be they freshwater or marine
fishkeepers, coldwater or tropical, or keepers of aquatic invertebrates.
Species profiles (300+ at the last count in October 2003) are regularly
updated, and there is a bulletin board that aquarists can join, to find
out from others how to keep sought after fish or invertebrate species,
or to share their own fishkeeping experiences, including maintenance and
captive breeding successes. Go read my HUGE collection of Panda Catfish
posts on this Board! (smile) Oh, and meet a brace of experts, including
our resident marine biologist, Shinigami, Oleta and the gang in the
Marine section, Cory_Di, Roona, Dark Realm Overlord, Koi Keeper,
Garyroland, Bruce Moomaw (Characin specialist), Angiewny, Madattiver,
Toirtis ... these are just the names I can remember off the top of my
head, if I've left out any of my regular correspondents, don't fret,
I'll introduce you too! Oh, and of course, there's Adam, the Board
Administrator, who keeps the whole portal going. Come and join the gang,
the best informed AND the friendliest aquarist haven on the Internet!
Oh, you'll find me under my board nickname of "Calilasseia", by the way
...
Greg Lasley is a wildlife photographer whose subject
matter covers a vast range, far too diverse for me to summarise here,
but one wildlife subject of his was of particular interest to me, namely
hummingbirds, which I wished to use in my art. Greg kindly granted
permission for me to use some of his hummingbird photographs in my
faerie art, and so, the very least I could do was add a link to his
wildlife photography site on my pages, and urge people to see his work
first hand! And so, here is the link (click upon the usual pretty button
at the side, which incidentally features two of Greg's hummingbirds).
Oh, and when I last contacted him (which was admittedly some time ago),
Greg was embarking upon a six-month Antarctic expedition, so perhaps his
site now features some Emperor Penguin footage too - however, as these
birds have an unusual breeding strategy, namely producing their young in
the midst of the Antarctic winter, with temperatures plummeting to -80°C
at times, captuing any photographs of these birds breeding
involves enormous hardship on the part of the photographer. Greg
would doubtless nod approvingly at the comment that at least the photographer gets to retire to a
warm shelter afterwards, while the penguins have to stand out in the
open for over six weeks, huddling together for warmth amid 100 mph winds and temperatures
cold enough to make mild steel turn as brittle as glass ... meanwhile,
you can view Greg's handiwork from around the world by clicking on the
button to the left, which I made especially for him. Greg, if you pass
this way, and I haven't already mailed a copy of the image file to you,
feel free to copy the button image for your own use.
E-Mail Me
And now, after all of that, if you find that my passions
and delights speak to you also, and you wish to become one of my legion
of correspondents (now spanning three continents), then here is another
decorative button, provided for the purpose:
Oh, and if anyone finds any broken links, send me an E-
Mail via the above button too, and I shall do my utmost to fix them.
Likewise, those who wish to have a set of spangly faerie wings of their
own can also send me a message, and if they ask me nicely, I shall see
what I can do! The minimum requirement is a good-quality photograph,
scanned and saved in JPEG format,
preferably scanned at 150 dots per inch or greater resolution. Check the
file size before sending: because those wonderful (sarcasm mode) people
at Hotmail place a 2 megabyte restriction upon the size of my E-Mail
account, if the file size is greater than around 300 Kilobytes, it might
end up being trashed by the server. Don't worry if you have to use large
amounts of compression to shrink the file size, Adobe PhotoShop's lovely
tools will recover the lost data almost as good as new!
Oh, and what do I charge for this service? Zilch. I do
it because I enjoy it. Just as that nice Linus Thorvald wrote Linux
because he wanted the world to be a better place, and not because he
wanted to become a fat cat in a suit with a Mercedes-Benz penis
extension and a grand country house ... Gordon Gekko was WRONG, greed is NOT
good!
If the Hotmail account proves too troublesome, I shall
make alternative arrangements for receipt of JPEG images. Note to those money-grubbing suits
at Microsoft: if you keep treating the public with such contempt, they
will all desert you and start running Linux instead, because it's free
... I can hardly wait for that day to come to pass!
Font Download
Since this site is intended to be viewed using the Black
Chancery font, I thought it would be a good idea to allow those not
blessed with this font to be able to download it. It is, I assure you, a
freeware font, and many other freeware fonts can be obtained from those
wonderful people at ACIDFONTS. Once again,
I provide some decorative buttons for the purpose ... oh, a note of
warning before you continue! If your browser does not allow you to
download direct from me, then please upgrade your browser, as I do not
know how to support the FTP protocol in my
own code yet, and no-one has bothered to educate me ... sigh
...
Credits & Acknowledgements
Finally, I provide another decorative button for those
who wish to view the list of credits and acknowledgements. Which,
needless to say, is compiled with the usual attention to detail, and
love of whimsical humour ...
The above credits and acknowledgements were brought to you by
